What to do in Skagway, Alaska

I had the chance to visit Skagway, Alaska while on a cruise. And let me just say, this place was beautiful! I will be sharing with you what I did and what you must see and do!

The main attraction of Skagway would be the White Pass Railroad.  The White Pass Railroad station and pickup site are one of the first things you see when coming from the cruise ships. You should take the chance and ride this train! It had beautiful scenery and we even crossed into British Columbia before we turned around. (No you do not need a passport to go.) Below are some of the photos I took while riding the train.

The Border

As you can see, the rivers were a stunning shade of blue. This shade of blue indicates silt in the water. There is silt in the water because a glacier was carving out the land higher up on one of the many mountains. The sediment the glacier picked up was transported from the melting glacier to the river.

There were two tunnels we were able to go through. I was able to get a video of the train going through the second one.

The picture with the river alongside the tracks was the point we had to turn around. This was in Beautiful British Columbia!

That trail you can see faintly in the rocks is the White Pass trail. It was used in the days of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Along with the railroad, there is also a little lesser known place in Skagway: The Klondike Gold Rush National Historic Park. If you want to learn more about the gold rush and the effect it had on Skagway. Also if you are a National Park lover, they do have a few stamps. If you are traveling with children, there is a Junior Ranger Program and a whole other building with interactive workshops for kids. (These include coloring sheets, feeling animal pelts, and games on some computers.)

There are also a few places where you can pay to "mine gold" out of a pan. We had someone with us that wanted to do this, and it was very enjoyable. We were able to keep the gold we panned out of the dirt and put it in a bottle with water.

For our lunch, we ate at the Sweet Tooth Cafe. It was so good! It was a bit of a chilly day when we went and they had a soup lunch special that was so filling!

If there are any fabric lovers out there, there was a fabric shop with Alaska themed fabric. What I mean by that is it was fabric with mostly wildlife (native to Alaska) and some Northern Lights fabrics. Speaking of the Northern Lights, I never saw them... I was able to experience the midnight sun effect though.

The Midnight Sun Effect is when the sun doesn't fully set because the sun is closer to the North Edge of the globe.

Want to learn about my wildlife watching experience in Seward? Or my tour of Anchorage I went on? Ever heard of Mendenhall Glacier? Learn more about it here!
